Yacht Rock Wedding

Yep, it’s the nuptial everyone is talking about.  Yacht Rock wedding band center stage making an impact and taking smooth to that next level.  Sure, you could hire that Bruno Mars tribute band and Uptown Funk it for the 10,000th time.  However, in the last 5 years, the stock price of smooth has soared and hot weddings require something with that X factor.  Believe me, we all love to get down to 24k and the classics of Sweet Caroline, Mustang Sally, Brick House, and Don’t Stop Believin’.  But, the heyday of that cliché vibe is waning.  And, why not go for something new and fun.  Providing a distinctive experience is definitely our game.  In fact, we are playing the playlist of your life and the vibe just screams, “I’m on a Boat“!

Furthermore, Yachty by Nature turns 5 years young this year.  Now, we recount the experience of early Yacht Rock years.  In fact, the specter of captain hatted sailors headlining the “big day” for a bride and groom 5 years ago was limited to the superfan and deep yacht rock enthusiast.  On the contrary, the time has come and smooth music and smooth sailors are taking the yacht rock wedding scene by storm.

Smooth Sailing

For example, our band Yachty by Nature booked weddings in the last couple years from Catalina Island all the way to Okoboji in Iowa, Sacramento river delta, Paso Robles, and Arizona.  In fact, the weddings we played were more than our usual Love Fest.  These matrimonial memories were like a destination wedding in some regards.  They were taking the pleasure cruise and it didn’t have to be all yacht.  It was just a high falootin’ affair christened by the cruisiest band in all the land.  No longer was a yacht rock band a niche or novelty occurrence.  Smooth has hit the mainstream.  With its widespread appeal, the smooth music hits the delight of dancers from age 8 to 80.

yacht rock wedding yachty by nature yacht rock band bands im on a boat sailing yacht los angeles california san diegoThe transcendence of yacht music symbolically broke through the radio waves with Sirius/XM yacht rock radio.  As well, weddings ran the gamut from friendly low key to high brow.  In the same way that audiences fawn over Africa at sporting events and yacht parties, Yachty by Nature is playing weddings and the music fits like a glove.  In fact, the entire experience is a spectacle from the dress of our outfits to the performance of our songs.  It’s an event, a place to be, and an experience that becomes infectious fast.  The yacht band, the imagery, and the fun all works.  As much as having a band for tying the knot provides interaction.  The Yacht Rock wedding experience takes the fun to the next level.  The crowd anticipates the captain hat crew.  And, when the boat launches, the smooth music swarms and the yacht party ensues!

Covid Cancellations!

Believe it or not, we have plenty of yacht rock weddings looking to 2021 now!  The cancellations over the pandemic have added up.  In addition, it looks like next year is ripe for a lot of new marriage and wedding dates.  In fact, June and July 2021 are going to be a gold rush of postponed weddings.  As you can see, we look forward to playing again.  Let’s hope that things will get better and life can get back to normal.  Hopefully, 2021 will see us right the ship and get back on course.  Our Iowa wedding and many others unfortunately couldn’t happen because of Covid 19.  But rescheduling is happening and we just played for a wedding reception in Paso Robles last weekend.  Come Sail Away and know that Yachty by Nature will be there to make that Yacht Rock Wedding happen.

When it comes time to planning that wedding, check out this great article!  It comes from our friends over at Art and Soul based in Los Angeles.  Especially if you’re planning during the times of Covid 19, it’s a great read.  In fact, it even features a great picture of our own Captain Carl under the heading COMPLIANCE CAPTAIN!  Who knew 🙂

First, it goes without saying we have a passion for Yacht Rock music.  Secondly, Yachty by Nature has a pedigree that few other bands have now.  With 5 years of playing music from coast to coast, our experience really shows.  From early small bars to Brooklyn Bowl to opening for Snoop last year on a massive stage, we are comfortable with all size of venues.  In addition, personality goes a long way.  Hiring us makes a statement and when we hit the stage it’s a party starter and show stopper.

This band has a professional approach that leaves a mark every time.  Friendly, approachable, fun, and interactive, this yacht band is smooth sailing.  As well, the level of musicianship is first rate and we go ALL LIVE all the time, no phony pre-recorded backing tracks.  Ultimately, plug in this band of yacht rock superstars and you have the Caddyshack meets Step Brothers and Ron Burgundy experience.  The witty banter, epic tunes, and captain outfits come together into one special night of Catalina Wine Mixer fun and frolic.

Full Service Yacht Rock

Yep, this band aims to please.  We regularly incorporate the services of our resident DJ Tony Trunks and our emcee Joey!  When you drop anchor with the S.S. Yachty by Nature we’ve got you covered.  Our emcee is second to none.  A full pro and musician himself, Joey takes over the helm and rides you to the straits of smooth.  Indeed, this smooth operator not only has the experience of a live musician and knows how to start the party.  He battens down the hatches for the smooth pleasure cruise from the ceremony to the dance party.  Likewise, DJ Tony Trunks literally breaks out the vinyl and drives this old school party boat to the jams both new and old that will rock the yacht.  He knows his music and if you like smooth, you’re gonna love this guy.

As you can see, our Yacht Rock wedding game is strong so don’t hesitate to fly the SOS and we’ll be there.  Our clients sing our praises and we love to entertain.  Hit us up as soon as possible if you want to Rock the Boat.  Since Covid 19, this next year will be packed and Yachty by Nature will be on high demand.  Bottom line, for those about to Dock, we salute you.  Make this a wedding to remember and get yachty with America’s yacht rock band, Yachty by Nature.

Im on a Boat – still sailing to Yacht Rock!

By : Captain Carl | Comments : No comment | Category : Yachty by Nature

Im on a boat!

Well, it’s been nearly 6 months of Covid 19 and hopefully you’re still on the Yacht!  We can’t wait to say Im on a Boat again.  In fact, it’s really what we all need to keep cruising.  America’s Yacht Rock band, Yachty by Nature is in dry dock, but not forever.  Stay tuned as we are able to add live shows.  Importantly, we observe many of our crew out their on the water these days and getting wet in general.  It’s starting to be a hot summer here in August and everyone is flocking to the outdoors.  Lots of Tahoe, Catalina Island, San Diaaago, and even the roasting out in Lake Havasu.  We hope you’re finding an escape with our music and a watery resort somewhere.

Paramount to the genre, many of our fans keep telling us, “Im On a Boat!”  And. if you haven’t enjoyed the Andy Samberg and T-Pain smash tune, I’ll post it here.  It’s the clean version but watch out for lots of language there. As you can tell, we love dropping anchor in a sea of smooth tunes.  This tune is off the chart for many of our yachty fans and Of course, we’re still pining away for the amazing concerts we had scheduled this year:

  • im on a boat yacht rock soft rock yachty by nature captains harbor yachtley crew newport laguna ventura carl scotty mcyachty ben shreddin ocean sea cruise catalinaCatalina Island
  • Pala Casino
  • The Canyon Club
  • Kansas City and Iowa
  • Telluride
  • Gaslamp in Long Beach

And so much more.

Yachty… By Nature.

So many fun yacht rock shows that couldn’t have been.  Lots of weddings postponed or canceled.  But, remember, we’re still in this together and we look forward to bringing you smooth sounds again LIVE.  Additionally, we hope you’ve joined the few virtual concerts that Yachty by Nature played.  Moreover, our shows at Rancho Fest in June, Whittier in July, and Brea in August were in line with Im on a Boat.

The band hadn’t seen each other since March so June was a bit of a rough sea.  However, Whittier got cruising and we featured our substitute and Courtney Cruise’s sister:  Summer Cruise.  Who knew it’d be such a Summer Breeze but glad you made those performances.  Then, in Brea, we really found a stride and Courtney’s return signaled an epic Set List and I’ll post it here for those interested.  It was a Hot August Night and Brea really had the sound dialed in for us.  Obviously difficult to play to an empty house, but a million thank you’s to joining us!  It means a lot.

Nevertheless, the band was on fire and the set list at Brea was a hot one!  You can still find the Live Facebook video up on social media or even check out the Yacht Rock setlist we played that night.  It was truly deep in the yacht and a smooth pleasure cruise that was so unique!  In fact, it was a rare one to combine so many deep and yachty cuts.  Go check it out.  Imagine some Captain and Tennille, Olivia Newton John and even Sanford Townsend Band and other rare yacht rock songs.  Our girl singer Courtney Cruise was in rare form and belted out those deep cuts for us in style.

As always keep requesting new tunes for us to play.  You never know when we’ll get your favorite – im on a boat – style yacht song into the mix. Lately we’ve had plenty of success with Carly Simon’s hot hit, You’re So Vain.  Check this video of us crushing it with Courtney Cruise on vocals.  So good.

Drive In Concerts

Hey, City of Irvine is hosting us for a Drive-In Concert on August 29 to finish the summer.  Although we can’t say, Im on a Boat, this yacht band will be rockin’ it LIVE.  Located at the Great Park in Orange County, CA we’ll really be rockin’ the yacht in public again.  Kudos to our Irvine and South Orange County peeps for making it all happen.  The concert sold out for 250 cars quickly but hope to see some more parking lot and drive in yacht concerts.  The trend seems to be going that way and indoor concerts may be a thing of the past for now.  So, for the time being, get it while it’s yacht!  Promising another hot setlist for this show, things are starting to happen, although things are still pretty closed up.

Im on a Boat again!

Speaking of which, we just booked a show up in Northern California.  It’s truly a yacht band show, complete with a big stage on the dock and yacht rock captains and captainettes cruising by.  Wish you could be there, but it’s a private community on the Sacramento Delta near Stockton.  We always love traveling for yacht rock shows.  Above all, we’ll be saying Im on a Boat all weekend long for Labor Day weekend.  For those about to dock, we salute you.  Delta Coves here we come!  It’s going to be one holiday weekend for the books.  We’ve played Northern California before but everyone wants their yacht rock on the water and this band is on it!  If this dock is a rockin’ don’t come a knockin’.

Ships Ahoy

In addition, we’ll be traveling to the central coast in October as well for a private show.  Even during the pandemic, seems Yachty by Nature is the choice of a yacht generation!  Of course, we pair well with a good rosé, but a fine cab as well, but champagne may be our favorite.  As luck would have it, we’ll be popping the champagne at this show for a yacht rock wedding.

In closing, don’t let the pandemic get you down.  Keep listening, stay tuned for upcoming shows, and things are starting to happen.  Have faith, we’ll be back.  Bigger, better, smoother and yachtier than ever.  Activate your playlists and keep it smooth no matter what you do.  Thanks again for all the support and we miss everyone immensely.  Everyone has poured out their longing for concerts returning and there will be some shows this fall somehow and some way.  Keep it safe and healthy and looking forward to getting yachty with you soon.

Soft Rock Songs and the ship they rode in on!

By : Captain Carl | Comments : No comment | Category : Yachty by Nature

Soft Rock Songs…ahoy!soft rock songs classic 70's and 80's bee gees yacht rock band yachty by nature

Diving into the yacht rock genre, it can be rough seas navigating which tunes are actually on the Yacht.  In fact, we get a lot of uncertainty from audiences and social media alike.  Moreover, the inventors of the genre have a strict rating system for Yacht Rock.  Whereas, the public and yacht rock radio have an ever shifting understanding of true yachtiness.  But no other music muddies the smooth seas of yacht like its kissin’ cousin:  soft rock.  As you can imagine, tunes like Sailing, Steal Away, and Toto’s 99 are certified smooth yacht.  Yet, they are indeed soft rock songs.

To be exact, Soft Rock Songs can be yachty as heck, or not even close to being on the boat.  Indeed both types of music hit the charts hard in the 1970’s and 1980’s.  It is true that yacht music often drifts close to the ports and coastal inlets of R&B, jazz, rock, classic rock, prog, and other mid 70’s and 80’s grooves.  But, again, the Yachtski Scale is clear on the defining characteristics of smooth.  In fact, if Michael McDonald or Kenny Loggins are not at the helm, you got some figuring to do!  For more on this, feel free to check our set list under the Song List tab.  However, we play plenty of soft rockers too!  Interestingly enough, there’s always room on the yacht concert for some soft rock songs.  So, let’s take a closer look at more of this music.

What is Soft Rock?

First, soft rock continued a trend starting in the 1960’s for generally pop love songs typified by a slower to mid tempo.   Later, the music would be known as Light Rock and even Adult Contemporary by the 1980’s.  The major artists of the 70’s would include Seals and Crofts, the Carpenters, Barbra Streisand, John Denver, Neil Diamond, England Dan and John Ford Coley among others.   From the early 70’s on, there are plenty of #1 hits that qualify as soft rock songs.  While hitting the charts isn’t necessarily a measure of soft rock or not, it indicates how huge the genre dominated the charts through the 70’s and 80’s.  Additionally, study your YouTube videos of these songs for the evidence!

In fact, the soft rock band Bread led the early charge by soft rockers.   Particularly, they hit the charts with top 10 hits on If, The Guitar Man, It Don’t Matter to Me.  But don’t forget, soft rock songs ultimately branched to include music that was considered folky to disco to 80′ and 90’s Adult Contemporary.  [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v99bVIDLRwU[/embedyt]

Singer/Songwriters

Prominently featured as singer/songwriter ballads, soft rock songs rely on quality songwriting and lush production.  They certainly don’t feature edgier tones or attitude.  The songs are sweet, soft,, simple, melancholic melodies.

In fact, Olivia Newton John seems to call out the appeal for these soft melodies with her famous song, “Have You Never Been Mellow”.  Interestingly, those of 70’s kids often remember hearing these songs in the back of the station wagon on road trips.  The airwaves were filled with this soft but groovy music known as AM Gold or Easy Listening.  The genre had many chart toppers and due to the easy vibe of these songs.  They are alive in the nostalgic consciousness for sure.  In addition, soft rock songs like Summer Breeze, I’d Really Love to See You Tonight, the Piña Colada song are great examples of these tenets.  But we could go on with many Bee Gees songs and even famous Bond themes like For Your Eyes Only and Nobody Does it Better.

There are some departures from the genre here.  In fact, many groups are not soft rock but they tickle the line.  Look at the hits that are downtempo and simple melodic ballads but are classically soft.  The Eagles aren’t a soft rock band.  However, their hits like I Can’t Tell You Why and Peaceful Easy Feeling are soft rock songs from a more classic rock band.  Fleetwood Mac would probably fit the same bill.  At the same time, some hard rock bands dipped into the soft rock zone for big hits in the same era.  Dust in the Wind by Kansas and Babe by Styx and even Beth by Kiss showed that hard rockers and even some metal bands embraced soft rock.

Yacht Rock vs. Soft Rocksoft rock songs captain scottsdale arts festival come sail away yacht rock schedule laguna beach yachty by nature emerald bay private community soft rock los angeles san diego 80s 70s hall and oates

As you can see, the distinction between yacht rock and soft rock songs can be tricky.  Where, in fact, does the cruise begin?  Well, first, Yacht Rock focuses on “smooth” music that is lushly produced but jazzy and R&B by talented session musicians.  It is characterized by less “simple” melodies and more intricately written and professionally played by the captains of the industry.

Easily noted, Toto and Steely Dan are serious yacht rock standouts.  Just put the groove and polish of Rosanna and the slick playing and vocal harmony of Peg next to a soft rocker like How Deep is Your Love and there you have it.  In addition, to be on the boat, the purists look strictly to the time frame of 1976 to 1984.  This is one of the reasons that soft rock hit, Brandy is not technically on the yacht.  However, our band Yachty by Nature loves playing that song and if we didn’t we’d be thrown off the boat!

Of course, yacht rock can have up tempo grooves and even songs not considered “soft”.  For example, Hold the Line exhibits the band Toto rocking out and songs like Lido Shuffle have Boz Scaggs pushing the smoother tempo, vibe, and “shuffle”.  That said, soft rock songs are certainly lacking that “Doobie Bounce” that yacht rock is famous for.  Particularly, when Bernard Purdie and Jeff Porcaro provide that shuffle on drums, the music bounces along with much more groove.  However, there are plenty of artists on the boat with purely soft rock songs.

Even Boz Scaggs, Michael Jackson, Chicago, Michael McDonald, & Christopher Cross, have soft rock songs that are on the yacht.  For example, one of our favorites, You Belong to Me by the Doobies, clearly makes the grade but is certainly a down tempo “soft” song.

AM GOLD

To new fans of Yacht Rock, the hook is deep.  It is fun music, brings the colorful vibe, and embraces an Escape from the world today.  To some it offers nostalgia.  To others, it’s fantastic music.  And yet for many, it’s the frenetic energy of the captained hat, ascot wearing, deck shoe adorned yacht party going on.  No matter what it is, the music is smooth and the vibe is clearly fun.  Soft rock songs and yacht rock songs certainly collide with a blurred line of vibrant fuzziness.

But no matter whether you call Hall and Oates and Little River Band yacht rock or not, that line of fuzziness is becoming more and more a personal distinction.  The purists won’t agree on Brandy or Hall and Oates but to our audiences at the Yacht Concert, the boat still floats.  Increasingly, our fans are calling for some Eagles and Fleetwood Mac and many soft rock songs that technically wouldn’t be on the yacht.  We just try to keep it fun, keep it colorful, and work hard to play good music.  As you can see, there’s plenty of space to include both smooth music and the softer stuff too.  They certainly go together in this sense like the rum and coke in your Cuba Libre and can be a bit intertwined.  Just keep it fun.  Going to post a couple videos of some crossover soft rock here, so enjoy.

And, here’s our archived post from May.

Happy Piña Colada day by the way!
